WINTERPORT (AP) – Investigators hoped an autopsy Friday would shed light on the identity of a body found in the Penobscot River.

A man’s body that washed up Thursday at Mid-Coast Marine had been floating in the river for a long time, according to Ed Badershall, office manager for the company.

Fire Chief Stan Bowden agreed with Badershall’s assessment based on the condition of the body.

The decomposed body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta, where an autopsy was scheduled for Friday, said Scott Bryant, the lead investigator with the state police.
