President Kennedy once said that “Mankind will put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind.” To date, we have not put an end to war, and I fear that if we do not do so urgently, the war in the Middle East will put an end to mankind.

I, for one, have never believed that we could win this “war on terror” because our civilization is too complex and vulnerable; because we have demonized the “enemy” without ever really knowing or understanding him; and because the Sermon on the Mount (which to my knowledge is unique to Christianity, and in the eyes of some, its very essence) obliges us not to respond to evil in kind, not even preemptively.

In my opinion, the only way we can win this “war” is by example and that means getting our own moral, economic and political house in order first. We must turn our swords into plowshares, resurrect our national ideals and resume the quest for liberty and justice for all, here and abroad.

We must put an end to this madness of war, once and for all, before it puts an end to us.
