LEWISTON – Elisabeth L. “Betty” Lavigne, 65, of Elm Street, Winthrop, died Friday, June 4, at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Born in Boston, Mass., Sept. 1, 1938, she was the daughter of Harold and Eleanor (Cruickshank) Godfrey Sr.

“Betty” had worked at Woolworth’s Department Store in Massachusetts, and later at Carleton Woolen Mills in Winthrop, retiring in 2000. She married Nelson Lavigne on Feb. 22, 1956.

She attended Faith Alliance Church in Winthrop and was a member of the United Paper Workers Union, Local 1235. She enjoyed reading, craft work, crossword puzzles, but especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include four sons, Nelson Lavigne Jr. and his wife, Sherry of Winthrop, David A. Lavigne and his wife, Penny of Winthrop, Kenneth Lavigne and his wife, Lisa of Augusta and Neil Lavine and his wife, Raquel of Fayette; three daughters, Cheryl Lavigne of Winthrop, Kathleen M. Ayer and her husband, David of Livermore and Judith Denham and her husband, James of Lisbon; two brothers, Herb Godfrey of Mansfield, Mass., and Al Godfrey of Stoughton, Mass.; 11 grandchildren, Erica Lynn, Daniel Allan and Christopher David Lavigne, Nicholas Ryan and Justin Adam Ayer, Amber Lynn, Joshua James and Rebekah Elisabeth Denham and Matthew James, Katelyn Ann and Natasha Renae Lavigne; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Nelson Lavigne Sr. in 2003; and a twin brother, Bud Godfrey in 2002.
