NORWAY – The Norway Summer Festival will include Poets on the Porch for the second year.
Local poets will share their work by reading it aloud to passers-by from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 10. Last year, the poets read from the Weary Club porch. This year, they will read from the porch of the Norway Public Library. Chairs will be set out on the library lawn and poems and books will be for sale at a table out front.
Local poets may sign up for five-minute slots by calling Lisa Moore at 743-9808. The poems must be original and suitable for all ages. Last year, poets ranged in age from 16 to 75 and came from all over the Oxford Hills.
So far, the 2004 lineup includes: Lisa Moore of Harrison, John Governale of Norway, Siiri Cressey of Farmington, George Twine of West Paris, Tom Foley of Oxford, Lisa Campobasso of Norway, Brigid Gallagher of Woodstock and Elise Caswell of Albany Township.
Many of the poets are active in the Mountain Poets Society, which meets at 7 p.m. the last Thursday of each month at Fare Share Commons. Their next meeting is June 24. Everyone is welcome.
Group members take turns reading their poetry aloud. The group began as the Bethel Poets Society in 1995 and moved to Norway last fall. Rockie Graham and George Twine were among its founders and are still active in the group.
Poets on the Porch is free and open to everyone.
