LEWISTON – The Sherwood Heights Elementary School first-grade class has a display of art at the St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center Visiting Artist Gallery during June.
The 6- and 7-year-olds in Michelle Gagne’s class have been busy sharing their talents with each other this year.
During a discussion on the subject, Gagne said landscape painting was one of her talents. The children were intrigued.
Not long after that they began an eight-week study of landscape painting. During that time, the children were exposed to many new concepts – depth perception, the use of texture and the art of creating realistic images.
The project was so successful that Principal Katherine Grondin, other teachers and many parents became involved. Within weeks, 19 children created their own 11 by 14 masterpieces, 17 of which are being displayed at the St. Mary’s gallery, Campus Street entrance.
