With only a few towns left to tally, David R. Hastings III led by 98 votes late Tuesday in a close race for the Republican nomination for Senate District 13.

Hastings won by a wide margin in his hometown of Fryeburg and the Cumberland County towns of Naples and Bridgton. Hiram and Porter also gave the nod to Hastings.

Jackson had similar solid victories in his hometown of Oxford and other nearby Oxford County towns in the 14-town district.

Reached late Tuesday, Hastings was optimistic. Results were still not in for Baldwin, Sebago, Brownfield and Denmark, but he expected to win in those towns.

“To be up nearly 100 votes with those towns left, it’s looking good,” Hastings said. “It’s been a real nail-biter, though, the whole night.”

Jackson could not be reached for comment.

Jackson, a businessman and former Oxford selectman, won the endorsement of outgoing District 13 Sen. Rick Bennett of Norway, who is leaving office because of the term limit law. Hastings, a longtime Fryeburg lawyer, was endorsed by Oxford County Sheriff Skip Herrick.
