PARIS – William Merrill and Barbara Paine were elected to the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday, and Edward Chouinard got a seat on the Paris Utility District.

Merrill retained his position with 313 votes. Paine was elected with 411 votes to replace Nancy Record, who is leaving after two terms.

They defeated father and daughter candidates Glen and Amanda Young.

Merrill has been a selectman for six years. During his two terms, the town has completed the Paris Fire Station and a property revaluation. In his third term, Merrill will continue to support road maintenance and upgrades, while working to keep taxes down, he said. He said he also hopes to bring more jobs into the town.

Paine is a lifelong resident of Paris and mother to three grown children. She enjoys small-town politics and believes that the town benefits when residents make their voices heard. She has served on the SAD 17 and Region 11 boards and currently serves on the Budget Committee.

Chouinard defeated Hans Paulsen for a seat on the utility district by a vote of 365 to 254. Chouinard has worked for 11 years in waste water treatment. He said he believes the efficiency of the town’s waste water plant can be improved through a renovation of the town’s pretreatment plan.

He works for the Portland Water District, which daily treats almost 100 times the amount of water as Paris.
