LEWISTON – Salvatore J. Aliano, 84, of 25 Julie St., Poland, died Monday, June 7, at Ste. Marguerite d’Youville Pavilion.

Born in Syracuse, Sicily Nov. 8, 1919, a son of Giuseppe and Lucia Greco Aliano the family moved to the United States in May of 1922.

After leaving high school he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and on Dec. 10, 1941, joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served on a Destroyer Escort until his discharge on Aug. 5, 1945.

In 1974, “Sal” moved to Maine, and worked in the new Allied Container plant in Auburn now International Paper to take over as maintenance supervisor retiring in 1983 after 25 years with Union Camp Corp.

He was involved with Amateur Radio, being licensed as W1CUW since 1954, and served as President of the Yankee Amateur Radio Club and was an active member and Past President of the Androscoggin Radio Club. He also was active as a volunteer in the Red Cross Blood Drives for 12 plus years.

Mr. Aliano was a member of the Auburn Catholic Community at Sacred Heart Church, served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Marian Council 11493 of Mechanic Falls and Past Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Andy Valley Memorial Assembly 2173 of Auburn. He was also a member of the Auburn Exchange Club served as President and District Deputy, was on the Board of Appeals for seven years for the Town of Poland.

He is survived by his wife, the former Adele Rokicki whom he married May 2, 1943. He visited Adele daily and became part of the 2 West Wing at d’Youville where she has been living for the past three years.

He is also survived by his children, Theresa and Phil Winer of Corning, N.Y., Robert and Kathy Aliano of Englewood, Colo., Jim and Betsy Aliano of Kent, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
