ORONO – The Special Olympics Maine State Summer games will be held June 11-13 at the Univeristy of Maine in Orono. More than 1,300 athletes representing 180 teams will compete in a variety of Olympic style sports.

It all begins on Friday, June 11, at 6 p.m. with a parade of athletes and local shrine units followed by opening ceremonies.

The Flame of Hope will be flown in on Lifeflight out of Bangor and then carried by police officer Emery Toulouse of Augusta and a Special Olympian from Washington County.

Prior to arriving, the Flame of Hope will be carried across the state by members of Maine law enforcement.

Competitions during the weekend will include track and field, bowling, volleyball, and wheelchair events.
