FARMINGTON – The 7th annual Glen Gilchrist Yellow Ribbon 5-kilometer race and 1-mile children’s fun run will be held Wednesday, June 16, rain or shine, starting and finishing at Titcomb Mountain Ski Area. Race-day registrations will be accepted from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. The 1-mile race starts at 6:30 p.m. and the 5-kilometer race starts at 7 p.m.
Proceeds from the event benefit Suicide Prevention – Yellow Ribbon Project. The race is held in memory of Glen Gilchrist, one of Mount Blue High School’s finest student-athletes. He excelled in cross country running, Nordic skiing and the 3,200-meter in track.
The race also features a mile split, water stations, refreshments and award ceremony. Race results will be published.
The 5-kilometer course starts at the ski area and winds around onto an old railroad bed, then continues onto secondary roads and finishes back at the ski area. The 1-mile course is located entirely at the ski area.
Age categories for the race, with awards given to the top two in each age group, for the 5 kilometer race are: 13 and under, 14-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and older. For the 1 mile race, age groups are: 6 and under, 7-9, 10-12 and 13-15.
Course records for the 5 kilometer race are held by Justin Easter, who ran it in 16:06 in 2001, and Tina Meserve, who ran it in 19:37 in 2001.
For the children’s 1 mile race, records are held by Matt Dunlap (5:24.18 in 2001) and Tory Gray (6:38.01 in 2002).
Preregistration may be mailed to Kelley Cullenberg at 57 Wilton Road, Chesterville, ME 04938, or participants may register on the day of the race. Registration fee is $6 for the 5 kilometer race and $4 for the 1 mile race. Checks should be made payable to the Mount Blue High School Cross Country Team.
