WATERVILLE – The Maine Elks Association presented a check for $171,000 to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. The donation was presented by State President James Ferland and Elks MCCP Director Donald Richard at the association’s 75th annual State Convention at the Waterville Elks Lodge on April 30 to May 2.

The donation represents the culmination of the Maine Elks fund-raising efforts for the 2003-2004 fraternal year.

Receiving the check on behalf of the program were Board of Directors President L. Robert Porteous III and Development Director James Bouchard.

The Maine Children’s Cancer Program is a major project for the Maine Elks Association, and this year will mark the 20th year that the two organizations have worked together to help kids fight cancer.

Over that period of time, the Maine Elks have donated more than $1 million and have consistently raised more than $170,000 for the past three years.

Elk Lodges have also donated toys through the “Owie Box” program. Children who are being treated for cancer get to select a toy from the “Owie Box” whenever the child undergoes a painful procedure.

In addition, the Maine Elks provide a day of fun and entertainment for the children at the annual Youthfest held in August.
