GREENWOOD – There will be 84 acres of green woods here forever if town meeting voters agree to buy an undeveloped hillside off Greenwood Road.

Already $11,000 in contributions has been pledged toward the deal, Town Manager Carol Whitman said. Voters gathering at Monday’s special town meeting are being asked to authorize the purchase for $16,800 or less.

Whitman said the land’s owner has offered it to the town at $200 an acre with the stipulation that the property remain undeveloped. The lone exception: cutting trails for hiking that would open the land for public enjoyment.

“We’re hoping to make the purchase entirely with donated funds,” Whitman said. Contributions toward the purchase are welcome, she added.

Another environmental issue facing voters deals with the town’s request for $65,000 in federal Department of Housing and Urban Development money. The block grant, with voters’ approval, will be used to help pay for the estimated $117,000 cost to repair a municipally owned dam on Alder River.

Whitman said the dam maintains water levels in North, South and Round ponds, each a recreational mecca to locals and visitors alike.

Woodstock, which shares shoreline on the ponds with Greenwood, agreed earlier to provide $15,000 toward the dam repair project.

Voters will also be asked to:

• Approve the sale of a tax title lot in the Mount Abram subdivision that contains the septic system for three homes.

• Table the sale of an adjacent parcel pending resolution of questions surrounding the foreclosure on it.

• Table action on a grant that has since been rejected. The money would have gone toward comprehensive community planning.

• Appropriate up to $5,914 from surplus for use as a 10 percent match for a federal Emergency Management Agency fire apparatus grant.

• Increase the mileage reimbursement paid to town employees from 30 cents per mile to 35 cents.
