LIVERMORE FALLS – Superintendent Doug Burdo reported Wednesday to Water District trustees on water protection activities held recently at Moose Hill Pond, the district’s primary source.

Eighteen students from Livermore Falls Middle school trained on volunteer modeling with the hydro lab, he said, and their teacher, Rick Hoddinott, will do the monitoring.

Students also did some mapping and surveyed the Route 17 side of the pond, discovering waste that is thrown out.

Burdo hopes to set up a similar plan at Parker Pond in East Jay, the secondary supply for the district that serves 1,300 residential and commercial customers in Jay and Livermore Falls.

Trustees agreed with that effort. “This is our community’s water supply, it’s a huge natural resource which needs to be protected,” Trustee Darryl Brown said.

Part of the new sand for the filtration system at Moose Hill Pond has been delivered and is being stockpiled. It is from Holliston Sand in Rhode Island and is of excellent quality, Burdo said.

Employees will need to clean the filter so one unit can be shut down and the sand replaced. The superintendent estimates the work will take about six days.
