OAKLAND, Calif. – Jermaine Dye singled with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to complete a wild comeback for the Oakland Athletics in a 12-11 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.
Marco Scutaro doubled to lead off the ninth, and after Mark Corey (0-1) got Eric Byrnes to fly out, Mark McLemore and Mark Kotsay were walked intentionally ahead of Dye.
Arthur Rhodes (3-3) blew his fifth save in 14 opportunities, most in the AL, but got the win when Dye singled.
Erubiel Durazo drove in three runs and Byrnes hit two homers as the A’s scored five times in the eighth inning against Pittsburgh closer Jose Mesa to take an 11-10 lead.
Bobby Crosby had two RBI doubles as the A’s extended their season-best winning streak to seven games.
Ruben Mateo had two homers, including his first career grand slam, and Jason Bay collected three hits and drove in two runs as the Pirates lost their seventh straight.
Mateo, who drove in a career-high five runs, tied the game with a solo shot off Rhodes leading off the ninth.
Pittsburgh reliever Salomon Torres and manager Lloyd McClendon were ejected after the right-hander threw two consecutive pitches behind Damian Miller in the eighth inning.
Torres’ first pitch sailed behind Miller about waist high, and plate umpire Kerwin Danley warned both sides. A’s reliever Justin Duchscherer had hit Pirates catcher Jason Kendall with a pitch in the top of the inning.
Torres’ next pitch also went behind Miller, earning an instant ejection. McClendon was also ejected as a result.
Torres argued with a fan sitting behind the Pirates dugout as he left the field escorted by a security guard.
The A’s and Pirates combined to hit five batters during Friday night’s 6-1 Oakland victory.
Jose Mesa replaced Torres. He struck out Miller but gave up a homer to Scutaro and consecutive singles to Byrnes, McLemore and Kotsay for another run. Scott Hatteberg added a sacrifice fly to make it 10-9, and Durazo and Crosby followed with their hits.
Mesa had allowed just three runs in his previous 22 innings.
Pirates starter Ryan Vogelsong failed to get an out in the fifth, leaving after Dye’s RBI double. He gave up six runs on eight hits in four-plus innings to remain winless (0-6) in 15 career starts on the road.
A’s starter Mark Redman lasted five innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Byrnes hit a 1-1 pitch for his fourth career leadoff homer. Bobby Crosby added an RBI double in the second to give the A’s a 2-0 edge.
Kendall and Bay each singled home runs in the third to tie the game at 2.
Byrnes’ second homer put the A’s in front in their half of the third. Durazo also singled home a run in the inning to make it 4-2.
Mateo’s grand slam in the fifth gave the Pirates a 7-4 lead.
Dye’s double and Durazo’s RBI groundout in the fifth brought the A’s to 7-6, but Jack Wilson’s single in the sixth added a run to Pittsburgh’s lead.
Chris Stynes, who had three hits, drove in a run in the seventh. Craig Wilson drove in a run in the eighth.
Notes: Bay was 2-for-18 with no RBIs against left-handed pitching before connecting against Redman. … A’s 2B Mark Ellis was in town to get his dislocated right shoulder examined. He’s out for the season with the injury. … Hatteberg singled in the seventh to extend his career-high hitting streak to 13 games.
