DETROIT – Nate Robertson pitched four-hit ball for eight innings and Ivan Rodriguez had two hits and an RBI against his former team, lifting the Detroit Tigers to their fourth straight win, 6-2 over the Florida Marlins on Saturday night.
Rodriguez, the star catcher who helped Florida to a surprising World Series title last October, went 2-for-4 for the second straight game against the Marlins.
Robertson (5-3) allowed the first two runners to reach base in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but got out of the jam each time by getting a double play. He struck out three, walked two and has won his last three decisions.
Luis Castillo led off the ninth with a homer off Jamie Walker, who then hit a batter and gave up a single after a fly out. After a double steal, Esteban Yan relieved and gave up a run on Damion Easley’s grounder. Mike Redmond then hit an infield single to put runners on first and third.
Ugueth Urbina entered and got Jeff Conine to fly out to center field for his 10th save in 11 chances.
Brad Penny (6-4) gave up four runs – three earned – six hits and struck out 10 in seven inning.
Conine and Alex Gonzalez singled to start the third. But Abraham Nunez bunted into a double play while attempting a sacrifice. Robertson caught the popup and threw to shortstop Carlos Guillen to double off Conine. Castillo then ended the inning by bouncing into a force play.
Juan Pierre singled to lead off the fourth and Mike Lowell followed with a walk. But Miguel Cabrera hit into a 4-6-3 double play and Easley popped to short to retire the side.
Robertson hit Redmond and walked Conine to begin the fifth. But after Gonzalez’s fly to right sent Redmond to third, Nunez bounced into a 5-4-3 double play.
Rodriguez’s run-scoring single gave the Tigers the early lead in the first after Alex Sanchez, who led off with a triple into the left-field corner.
Detroit added three in the seventh on Omar Infante’s RBI single and Penny’s throwing error on Sanchez’s bunt, which allowed two runs to score.
Rondell White had an RBI double and Brandon Inge added a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.
Notes: Lowell is hitless in 21 at-bats. … Rodriguez stretched his hitting streak to 11 games (23-for-46). He is also 25-for-52 over his last 13 games. … Easley started at first base for only the second time in his career. … Nunez hit into three double plays.
