JAY – The School Committee voted Thursday to eliminate three classroom teaching positions at the elementary school.

The vote was 4 to 1, with member Gene Uhuad opposing.

Superintendent Robert Wall said there were sufficient retirements at the school to cover the staffing cuts, so no staff members lost jobs. The school staff will go from 19 to 16 positions.

Wall had factored in the staff reductions when the $10.6 million school budget was put together because of a projected loss of 41 students.

Enrollment at the school, which serves students in kindergarten through Grade 4, is expected to drop from an October 2003 count of 286 students to 245 students in the 2004-05 school year, Wall said.
