WEST PARIS – Town Manager Donald Woodbury told the selectmen Thursday that he has mailed 140 30-day notices regarding unpaid taxes from 2003.

“I imagine the notices will generate calls and a lot of traffic, as most will respond as soon as they receive their notice,” he said.

In response to a question, he said he did not immediately know if the number was an increase over past years. Woodbury took over as town manager in March and was not in town last year.

In other business, the selectmen accepted with regret the resignation of Fire Chief Walter Inman, who had served as fire chief for two years.

After accepting the resignation, the board named Tom Speers as interim chief until department members vote to elect a new leader.

“It is up to the members of the department to recommend who they want for a new chief,” said Woodbury, “but in the interim Assistant Chief Tom Speers will run the department.”

The board also re-appointed Tom Verrill as the town’s sealer of weights and measures.

The sealer of weights and measures checks the accuracy of gas pumps and various scales used by businesses in town each year.

Explaining his work over the past year, Verrill told the board he checked 27 scales during 2003 and found all but five calibrated correctly.

“Those have since been corrected and, as of now, they are all set properly,” he said.

Finally, Selectman Jim Johnston said the town should consider repairs on the old town garage and storage buildings on Kingsbury Street.

The rest of the board agreed, and the selectmen plan to look at what repairs are needed soon.
