NEW YORK – The New York Yankees robbed David Wells with another stunning comeback.
First, Hideki Matsui and pinch-hitter Kenny Lofton hit consecutive homers with two outs in the ninth inning against Trevor Hoffman to tie the game.
Then, after San Diego took a three-run lead in the 12th, the Yankees rallied again, beating the Padres 6-5 Sunday behind Jorge Posada’s tying double and pinch-hitter Ruben Sierra’s game-winning sacrifice fly.
Astros 5, Brewers 4
MILWAUKEE – Jose Vizcaino and Jeff Kent each hit solo homers, and the Houston Astros held on for a 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.
Vizcaino went 3-for-5 for the Astros, who salvaged the final game of their three-game series at Milwaukee.
White Sox 10, Braves 3
CHICAGO – Mark Buehrle pitched eight solid innings, Carlos Lee extended his hitting streak to 27 games and the Chicago White Sox beat the Atlanta Braves 10-3 Sunday.
Lee lined a double to the left-field wall in the first inning, increasing the longest hitting streak in the majors this season. He matched the franchise record set by Albert Belle in 1997 and Luke Appling in 1936.
Cardinals 13, Rangers 2
ARLINGTON, Texas – Scott Rolen hit a two-run homer and an RBI double in the first two innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals completed another successful roadtrip with a 13-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Sunday.
The Cardinals, playing without manager Tony La Russa, led 10-0 after batting around in each of the first two innings and avoided their first losing trip of the season.
D-backs 5, Blue Jays 3
TORONTO – Randy Johnson struck out 11 and won his sixth straight start, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.
Johnson (9-4) started his run with a perfect game against Atlanta on May 18. The 40 year-old left-hander is tied with 41-year-old Roger Clemens and 39-year-old Kenny Rogers for the most wins in the majors.
Mariners 8, Expos 1
SEATTLE – Joel Pineiro ended his seven-game losing streak and the Seattle Mariners completed their first sweep of the season Sunday with an 8-1 victory over the Montreal Expos.
Pineiro (2-8) won for the first time in 10 starts since April 18. He lost 1-0 to Roger Clemens and Houston last Tuesday night.
Giants 7, Orioles 3
BALTIMORE – Barry Bonds hit his 676th homer and drove in three runs, leading the San Francisco Giants past Sidney Ponson and the Baltimore Orioles 7-3 on Sunday.
The Orioles decided to pitch to Bonds four times in five trips to the plate, and twice the slugger made them pay. He hit a two-run shot in the third inning and singled in a run in the sixth to make it 4-2.
Marlins 9, Tigers 2
DETROIT – Dontrelle Willis allowed seven hits in his second complete game of the season and Juan Pierre went 4-for-5 with an inside-the-park homer to help the Florida Marlins beat the Detroit Tigers 9-2 Sunday.
Florida avoided being swept in the three-game series and snapped Detroit’s four-game winning streak.
Mets 5, Royals 2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Tom Glavine took over the major league ERA lead and Mike Piazza backed him with a two-run homer that led the New York Mets past the Kansas City Royals 5-2 Sunday to stop a five-game losing streak.
Glavine (7-3) lowered his ERA to 2.03, moving ahead of Houston’s Roger Clemens (2.08). Glavine allowed two runs – one earned – and four hits in 7 2-3 innings, striking out five and walking one.
Phillies 2, Twins 1
MINNEAPOLIS – Cristian Guzman’s errant throw on a potential double-play grounder in the eighth inning allowed Placido Polanco to score the go-ahead run in the Philadelphia Phillies’ 2-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.
With the bases loaded and one out, the Phillies’ Chase Utley hit a sharp grounder to second baseman Luis Rivas, who flipped to Guzman for a force play. But the shortstop’s relay throw pulled first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz off the bag as Utley hustled down the line.
Athletics 13, Pirates 3
OAKLAND, Calif. – Adam Melhuse hit his first career grand slam and Mark Kotsay was 4-for-4 to lead the Oakland Athletics over the Pittsburgh Pirates 13-3 Sunday for a three-game sweep.
Melhuse had five RBIs, and Scott Hatteberg homered and drove in three runs, extending his career-best hitting streak to 14 games. Oakland has won eight straight, its longest winning streak since last Aug. 23 to Sept. 2.
Indians 10, Reds 8
CLEVELAND – Ken Griffey Jr. moved within one swing of history with his 499th career home run, but the Cincinnati Reds’ losing streak reached season-high six games with a 10-8 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Sunday.
Matt Lawton hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning as the Indians completed a three-game sweep with their third come-from-behind victory over Ohio’s NL squad.
