POLAND SPRING – The Western Maine and Southern Maine chapters of the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine will hold a joint meeting from 9 a.m. to noon on June 19 at Preservation Park.
Don Cameron, Maine natural areas ranger with the Maine Department of Conservation, will give a talk titled “Invasive Plants in the Woods.”
After the talk, the group will move outdoors to identify several of the growing list of invasive plants infesting woodlots, including honeysuckle, bittersweet, barberry, knotweed, buckthorn and autumn olive. Methods of control will be discussed.
The meeting will also include a visit to Maine’s largest shingle oak, which measures 34 inches in diameter.
The park is off Route 26 in Poland Spring. Meeting participants may follow signs to Preservation Way and the SWOAM signs to the parking area.
