FARMINGTON – Early registration is now available for a variety of Farmington Recreation Department summer youth programs, which will begin in July.

Supervised fishing for ages 7-11 will be held July 2 at the University of Maine at Farmington’s Rollo Pond. The hour-and-half morning session will teach children the basics of fishing. Enrollment is limited to 10 first-time participants. The only equipment necessary is a working, castable fishing rod and reel. The pond will be stocked with 100 rainbow trout before the program. Rollo Pond has a posted limit of three fish per person per day. Participants may register immediately for this program, and the cost is $10.

Summer softball for ages 8 to 13 will be held from July 6 to 22. Instruction in the noncompetitive program will focus on the development of proper techniques in throwing, catching, base-running and hitting. The program will be divided into two groups: Participants ages 8 to 10 will play from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and those ages 11 to 13 will play from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Participants are asked to bring their own gloves; all other equipment will be provided. Class size is limited to 15 for each division, so early registration is advised. Registration is $20 for Farmington residents and $25 for out-of-town residents.

Tennis instruction for ages 7 to 12 will be offered from July 6 to 29 at the Hippach Field tennis courts each Tuesday and Thursday morning. Participants in the one-hour classes will learn and practice basic strokes, and will learn the rules and scoring of the game. Those participating must bring their own rackets. Classes will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. for 7- to 9-year-olds, and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. for 10- to 12-year-olds. Tennis instruction is limited to 7 participants per class. Registration costs $20 and $25.

Jaime Beth Shible cheerleading camp will be held from July 6 to July 29 for ages 7 to 14. Participants will be taught by the Mount Blue alumni cheerleaders. The high-energy program was developed for aspiring Little League Football cheerleaders and those hoping to cheer at the high school level. It will take place each Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Farmington Community Center. An exhibition will be held during the final class on July 29. Registration costs $20 and $25.

The Paul Blauvelt baseball program will be held from July 7 to July 26 for ages 6 to 15 and offers an participants the opportunity to improve their game in the off-season. The program is divided into four divisions.

The Farm League Division, for ages 6 to 8, will focus on proper techniques for throwing, catching and hitting. The Cal Ripken Beginner Division, for ages 8 and 9, will concentrate on upgrading the basic skills necessary to compete at the Cal Ripken or Little League level. The Cal Ripken Advanced Division, for ages 10 and 11, is for current Cal Ripken League players who want additional practice to develop their games further. The Babe Ruth League Division, for ages 12 to 14, prepares players for the physical adjustment to the game at the next level.

The program will run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m. for Farm League, 10 a.m. for Cal Ripken Beginner Division, 11 a.m. for Cal Ripken Advanced Division, and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for Babe Ruth Division. Class size limited to 12 for each division. Registration costs $15 and $20.

Pre-season soccer camp for ages 7 to 14 will be held Aug. 4-7. The camp, devoted to skills development and fundamentals for new players, will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Hippach Field and concludes at 7:30 with an opportunity to cool down in the Hippach Field wading pool. Registration must take place before the first class, and costs $12 and $16.
