John Wakefield of Livermore has asked for a recount in the Democratic Party primary for House District 81. Only three votes separated the winner, incumbent Rep. Rodney Jennings, D-Leeds, from Wakefield. The tally was 327-324.

The recount is planned for 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Maine State Police Barracks in Augusta.

Jennings, 61, a paper mill worker, won in his hometown and in Wayne while Wakefield, 62, a legislative and financial manager of Maine Association of Retirees, took his hometown and won in Livermore Falls.

Wakefield initially said he wasn’t going to ask for a recount, then changed his mind.

Three votes out of 650 is worth looking at, Wakefield said.

Wakefield said the primary run was fun and a great learning experience.

Jennings, who will win re-election to his second term if the results hold up, said it just “proves that everybody’s vote counts.”

“It proves you’ve got to sell yourself to the people,” he said.
