I take exception to John Leo’s column of June 6. There is no need for more conservative reporters in the news media. What is needed are reporters who will report the substantiated facts of a story without spinning it one way or the other. To do otherwise is to rely on the assumption that the readers can’t think for themselves. In as much as he would like to push the political tenor of this country further to the right by determining that moderate Democrats are liberals, he would be well served to notice that moderate Democrats have been defecting to the Republican agenda on many important votes.

I believe most owners of news media outlets are Republicans and conservative. They are interested in selling their product to the biggest audience, so if the news seems to be of a liberal bent, then perhaps it is because their largest pool of customers has a tendency to lean that way.

Since Ronald Reagan ushered in the era of corporate mergers and acquisitions, thereby reducing competition and concentrating immense power and fortune into the hands of the few, news has been looked upon more as entertainment and a tool of propaganda.

The word liberal, as used by Republicans, implies something negative. Liberal politicians have historically worked to better the lives of the less advantaged; conservatives have worked to better themselves and their closest friends. I think Democrats should start implying the word conservative as meaning a fascist.
