WATERFORD – Gardening expert David Neufeld will host his seventh annual “Bloomsday” at his home this weekend.
Neufeld is a garden designer, stoneworker and columnist.
The free event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
People will be able to wander through the 2 acres of ornamental gardens that surround Neufeld’s home and listen to any of four talks he will give.
Titles of the talks are “The roots of garden design: Where do your garden design ideas come from?,” “Hardscaping: The building and placing of stoneworks, arbors, benches, trellises and gates to compliment the plantings,” “Low maintenance gardening,” and “Water features: Ponds, waterfalls and fountains.” Each talk runs about 40 minutes.
People who haven’t visited the garden recently – or ever – will see that it has grown over the past 10 years, Neufeld said.
Hundreds of species of trees, shrubs, perennials, biennials and annual plants are shoulder to shoulder. Many will be in bloom over the weekend.
Among the blooms are dozens of peonies, roses, delphinium, lady’s mantle, iris, day lilies, coral bells and primulas.
The garden also features unusual hostas, lilacs, clematis, dawn redwood, dogwoods, Japanese maple, seven varieties of magnolias, and jasmines.
The grounds offer secret gardens, a contemplative garden, a wisteria arbor, a beech alle and an herb garden.
Masonry features using boulders, split granite, brick, fossil-bearing limestone and cobbles can be see throughout the gardens.
In addition to celebrating his blooming plants, his “Bloomsday” is named after the annual day that James Joyce fans mark on June 16. Joyce’s novel “Ulysses” took place on June 16, 1904, and its lead character is Leopold Bloom.
Neufeld said he will answer visitors’ questions about their gardens as well as his grounds.
Nothing is being sold at the event, he said. It will be held rain or shine.
North Star Gardens is on Blackguard Road one mile from Routes 35 and 37 off Sweden Road in Waterford.
