OTISFIELD – The Otisfield Historical Society will present “Otisfield Quilts and Quilting” at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 24, in the Community Hall, Route 121. Barbara Swan Frost of Paris will give a short history of American quilting and provide information about the quilts on display for the evening.

She will explain that during the 19th century, quilting performed two important functions for rural women. It provided a chance to get together with other women in a socially accepted way and it satisfied a creative urge to produce something beautiful and practical.

Organizers of the program are hoping to display as many Otisfield quilts as possible. Anyone who wishes to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about his or her old quilt should contact either Ethel Turner at 539-4404 or Jean Hankins at 539-2521.
