SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Pinch-hitter Kevin Millar hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth inning, and the Boston Red Sox powered past the San Francisco Giants 14-9.

David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez also homered in the fifth, and Trot Nixon and Doug Mirabelli hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth for Boston.

Marquis Grissom homered twice for the Giants, who had their nine-game home winning streak snapped in the highly anticipated first regular-season meeting between the teams.

The game was played before a rowdy sellout crowd of 42,557, the Giants’ third-largest this season. After the homers by Nixon and Mirabelli, fans started throwing about two dozen baseballs onto the field, delaying the game.

Mike Timlin (4-2) pitched 2 2-3 innings for the win.

With Boston trailing 7-6 in the fifth, Millar’s shot hit the left-field wall just above the outstretched glove of Barry Bonds and went over for his second career pinch-hit homer – and the first by a Red Sox player this year.

Ortiz hit a two-run homer earlier in the inning and Ramirez connected for his AL-leading 18th homer one batter later for Boston, which had lost six of nine on the road.

The Red Sox made it 7-6 after consecutive fielding errors by shortstop Deivi Cruz and right fielder Michael Tucker.

Giants starter Jerome Williams (6-5) lost for the first time in eight career interleague starts. He gave up five earned runs and seven hits, struck out five and walked three in 4 2-3 innings.

Grissom hit his eighth homer leading off the third, sending the first pitch he saw from Wakefield into the left-field bleachers for a solo shot. It was his first homer since June 2 and snapped an 0-for-10 slump.

He connected again an inning later for a three-run homer. It was Grissom’s ninth career multihomer game, and third with the Giants. He also hit two April 13 this season against Milwaukee. Grissom grounded into a double play in the eighth after the Giants added two runs against Alan Embree.

Ortiz has driven in nine runs in his last two games. He had a career-high five RBIs on Thursday in Colorado, and two run-scoring singles to go with his homer Friday.

Friday marked the first game that’s counted since the clubs met in the 1912 World Series, when Boston beat the New York Giants in eight games.

Bonds, 0-for-7 lifetime against Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield coming in, went 0-for-3 with two walks – one intentional.

The Giants scored two unearned runs in the first following a passed ball and a wild pitch. Wakefield threw another wild pitch in the second, when the Giants added another run on Ray Durham’s sacrifice fly.

Wakefield hasn’t won since beating Toronto 7-2 on May 23 – a span of five starts.
