LEEDS – State Rep. Rodney Jennings of Leeds is still the winner of the June 8 Democratic primary for House District 81 after a ballot recount.

Challenger John Wakefield of Livermore asked for the recount after the initial tally showed Jennings won 327-324.

On Tuesday, the recount was 328-324 in Jennings’ favor, Wakefield said.

“It was very close,” Wakefield said. “It was good to put closure on it.”

Wakefield said initially that he asked for the recount because it was a close race and the towns of Leeds, Livermore, Livermore Falls and Wayne count ballots by hand.

“It was kind of fun,” he said. “The good news is I’ll get to play golf the rest of the summer.”

Jennings, who will seek his second term as a legislator in November, was unavailable for comment Tuesday.
