LIVERMORE FALLS – There will be two police officers on patrol Thursday nights, at least for the summer, selectmen decided Monday night.

Police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. told the board he was concerned about possible problems that night because it is payroll night for the area. Thursday, like Friday and Saturday, is a busy night, he said, and restoring that shift would provide more security.

Under the arrangement, there will be two officers on duty from 6 p.m. Thursday to 2 a.m. Friday.

Steward was cautioned to make sure this would not become an overtime issue. He had been instructed previously to drop 40 hours from the department’s schedule and had done so. This will restore eight hours of that time.

The board canceled the July 5 meeting. On July 19, the next scheduled meeting, a hearing will be held on a proposal to have no parking signs on the west side of Highland Avenue and the south sides of Cedar, Oak and Maple streets.

In other road matters, the board agreed that Record Road should be a 35 mph zone and Town Manager Alan Gove will check with the state on its status.

Selectmen also will continue to study the matter of the code officer’s request for a $1 an hour raise to compensate for the use of her own vehicle in her work. Use of the old police car may not be possible as officers will be using it to travel to Lewiston for court.

Ruth St. Armand, Peggy Taylor and Kevin Morrissey addressed the board about a new program associated with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.

They asked for the board’s help in bringing awareness to townspeople on how to respond to any disaster, including the possibility of a terrorist attack.

This program has been initiated in Winslow and is being used as the model here. Public forums will be held to raise community awareness.

Gove announced the last day for court here will be June 30, but the court will pay rent through July while the move is taking place.
