NEWRY – After 15 years of service to the town, Sylvia Gray has announced her plans to retire.

Her retirement becomes effective June 30.

Gray said she has been town clerk for five years, then administrative assistant to the selectmen for 10.

Other positions of note held by Gray: health officer, town agent, registrar of voters, election warden, member of the Tri-town Solid Waste Committee, member of the town’s Comprehensive Plan Committee and a member of the Newry Celebration Committee.

Her plans: “To spend time with my husband, Don, and enjoy my retirement.”

Loretta Berry was sworn in Monday to assume the administrative assistant position immediately following Gray’s final day in office, Gray said.

Berry has served as Gray’s deputy town clerk for the past six years.

Taking over the deputy’s position will be Anita Clark.

In regular business, Monday the selectmen requested further study and a meeting with members of the town’s Planning Board regarding a housing development that, if approved, is to be located off Sunday River Road.

According to Selectman Chairman Steve Wight, the development is planned to include 16 three-bedroom condominiums on 18.1 acres and is being planned by the Royal River Development Corp.

The request for more study and a meeting with town planners stemmed from concerns regarding wetlands in the area.
