FARMINGTON – Law enforcement officers are doing double duty in an effort to increase fund raising for Special Olympics Maine. They’ve done the Torch Run, washed cars and pumped gas. Now they will help wait tables.

On Friday, a cadre of law enforcement agents will participate in “Tip A Cop” at the Granary on Front Street in Farmington from 6 to 9 p.m.

Police will help the wait staff bus tables, serve nonalcoholic drinks, serve food and also talk to customers about the Special Olympics and the benefits of supporting it, said State Trooper Mathew Casavant, an organizer.

An envelope will be at each table, giving patrons an explanation of the fund-raiser.

Casavant said the tip for the olympics would be in addition to the tip left for the wait staff, because the officers do not want to take anything away from the staff.

Officers’ efforts to raise money is intended to pick up the slack for the program, which is feeling the state budget crunch, Casavant said.

Law enforcers have raised thousands of dollars this year for Special Olympics Maine, a year-round athletic training and competition program for people of all ages with mental retardation.
