PORTLAND – The Portland (Ore.) Youth Philharmonic will perform Friday, July 2, at Merrill Auditorium as the last stop on its 80th anniversary East Coast tour before returning home .

The ensemble, with conductor and music director Mei-Ann Chen, will perform at 7:30 p.m.

The concert’s program includes Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade;” the Maine premiere of Czech-American contemporary composer Tomas Svoboda’s Sonata for Orchestra No. 2; and Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.”

Founded in 1924, the Youth Philharmonic has had only four music directors. The orchestra has twice been honored by The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers for commitment to contemporary music and adventurous programming.

It has also made numerous tours to Europe and Asia. Selected from a field of more than 100 candidates, Chen has been music director since 2002.

Merrill Auditorium is in City Hall.

The auditorium entrance is at 20 Myrtle St.

This concert is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.

Doors will open one hour before the concert.
