WALES – Oak Hill High School Principal Bruce Johnson won’t return when school starts next fall. The school board has not renewed his contract.

Johnson served as principal of the 600-student high school for six years. In that time, the school was placed on accreditation probation because of problems with facilities, academics, leadership and organization.

Leadership and organization problems were fixed, but the school remains on probation for physical and professional issues.

School board Chairman Gregory Johnson said the board voted this spring not to renew Johnson’s two-year contract because he wasn’t completing teacher evaluations and other duties.

“Some of the paperwork part of his job wasn’t being taken care of properly,” he said.

Johnson will be replaced by Patricia Doyle, a veteran business teacher who has served as assistant principal of Oak Hill for four years. She will take over July 1.

As assistant principal, Doyle, 48, worked on implementing Maine Learning Results and helped create extensive local assessments.

As principal, she plans to continue those efforts, keep working on curriculum and look into changing the school schedule from trimesters to semesters.

The school board received other applications for the principal position but gave the job to Doyle without interviewing anyone else, according to Superintendent Paul Malinski.

“She has grown into the job,” the board chairman said.

Doyle’s vacant assistant principal position will be filled by Bob Birmingham, assistant principal and athletic director at Wiscasset High School. He also will start July 1.
