I am extremely impressed with Amanda Woodbury and her letter to the editor, “Unemployed,” (June 21). I know for a fact that her education will be totally wasted in Maine. She is only 28, and I hope she can find something she likes to do.
I’m 51 and have worked in the clerical field for 33 years. Along the way, I’ve taken courses for advancement such as bookkeeping and accounting, medical billing and claims and accounts receivable-collections. During this 33 years, I’ve been laid off, my job was eliminated or the plant closed. I lost my last job five months ago through job elimination.
I have over 100 applications and have had three interviews. Employers do not hire if you do not have work experience with any aspect of the position you are applying for. This is not a bright outlook for me, yet the career center says I am lucky to even have an interview.
I used to make $440 per week. Now unemployment gives me $194. My expenses are the same as when I was working. I do not have insurance because I could not afford to keep up COBRA and I do not qualify for MaineCare because “I make too much.” I need insurance because of my pre-existing condition that requires I take many medications, some of which are expensive. I am very fortunate I live with my sister. Otherwise, I would be homeless.
