AUBURN – Wayne St. Germain is fairly generous when describing the mood of movie buffs at Northeast Cinema in Auburn. Some people who want to see “Fahrenheit 9/11” have been downright rude. They’ve yelled and cursed after learning the controversial flick was not on the play list. They’ve taunted and verbally abused theater employees.
“People have been fairly passionate about it,” said St. Germain, the manager at Northeast.
Not to worry. According to a schedule released on Tuesday, Northeast Cinema will begin showing the documentary on Wednesday.
“The last I heard, we weren’t getting it,” St. Germain said. “Now we have it.”
That’s good news for Northeast and for local movie-goers eager to see the blockbuster film. It’s not good news for Flagship Cinema in Lewiston, where “Fahrenheit” is not expected to appear on the schedule anytime soon.
“We won’t have it this week,” said Flagship manager Doris Davis. “We won’t know more until Monday.”
After just three days, Michael Moore’s documentary has already set box-office records. The weekend’s top-grossing movie at $23.9 million, “Fahrenheit” has become the highest-grossing nonfiction film, aside from huge-screen IMAX films and concert movies.
“We’re hoping it will be very profitable,” St. Germain said. “It has certainly done well so far. Last Friday, the movie opened at only three Maine theaters: The Movies in Portland, Evening Star Theater in Brunswick and Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville. In the Twin Cities, people lamented that the movie could not be found here.
A corporate spokesperson at Flagship Cinema could only say that “Fahrenheit” might be showing at the Lewiston theater soon. She could not say when.
In Auburn, St. Germain said he and his employees were braced for the possibility of huge crowds on Wednesday. Then again, that was bound to happen anyway, thanks to a superhero with the freakish ability to fire webs from his fingers and climb around like an insect.
“It’s opening against Spider-Man,'” St. Germain said. “It’s hard to say if one movie will draw against the other.”
