GREENE – The store where Bob’s Discount started, a remodeled chicken barn off Route 202, closes in August.
Coming in its place: Saturday night sales on toys and antiques.
Just call it Bob’s Auctions.
Owner Bob Dinan said it was time to empty and close the 14-year-old Greene landmark.
“We’ve outgrown that store. It’s too small,” he said Wednesday. “I’ve been tracking sales out of there ever since Lewiston opened.” The corporate headquarters on outer Lisbon Street added retail space last fall. The spot has taken off, grabbing shoppers from Lisbon, Bath and Lewiston-Auburn.
Dinan said his intentions are to double the size of the Lewiston store. Coming next year: new shops in Augusta and Waterville.
“Next year, people will see bigger and better Bob’s Discounts,” Dinan said.
Once the Greene store closes Aug. 30, he said the space would be cleaned up and, starting Oct. 1, host weekend auctions. From October to December there will be toy auctions. The rest of the year, antiques and used furniture sales.
Dinan is a former auctioneer. He’s looking forward to the change. “I miss it. It’s like my Saturday night out,” he said.
The location hosted toy auctions before Dinan turned the building into a discount store in 1990. Attendance used to be “unbelievable, beyond your wildest dreams,” he said.
All employees at the Greene store will transfer to the Lewiston store. Greene is the last closing he has planned for the chain. He closed stores in South Paris and Farmington in the last year.
The five Bob’s Discounts in Maine are in Scarborough, Lewiston, Skowhegan, Brewer and Belfast.
Town Manager Steve Eldridge said he was surprised to hear the news, noting that a recent study showed demand for more businesses in Greene. The town has had interest from Dunkin’ Donuts, Movie Gallery and Androscoggin Bank, he said.
