Bob Perry of the John D. Long AL Post will fire the King’s Arm musket Fourth of July morning to carry on a tradition started in 1776 by the Parris family. The King’s Arm was brought from England in 1683 by Thomas Parris and used in the French and Indian War. It was handed down to the eldest son of each generation of Parris. When news of the Declaration of Independence reached Pembroke, Mass., where the family lived, the musket was fired in celebration and became a tradition that has been unbroken. It has been owned by Revolutionary War Capt. Josiah Parris, Buckfield, 1760-1856; Virgil Parris, 1807-1874; Edward Parris, 1837-1921; and Edward Parris, 1887-1950. The family, wanting to continue the annual Independence Day firing, gave the gun to the Buckfield Post in the early 1950’s who have carried on the tradition. Bob Hanson will fire his small cannon at the celebration.
