WILTON – A children’s medieval reading program is under way at the Wilton Free Public Library this summer.

The children’s room at the library has been transformed into a castle for the summer to enhance the experience of readers. The program, designed to teach children about the medieval period, “encourages them to delve into mystical places like King Arthur’s Camelot, the land of unicorns, a dragon’s lair or an enchanted forest,” according to a press release from the library.

Included in the program are hands-on experiences in arts and crafts, heraldry, dance, herbal medicine, feasts and fairs.

Opening the program on June 23 was musician and storyteller, Jennifer Armstrong. Armstrong accompanied participants with banjo and fiddle for a sing-along, and read poems by A.A. Milne and others, all with a medieval theme.

The library will be visited by a “knight in shining armor” at 6 p.m. July 8. Members of the Neville Companye, a group of medieval re-enactors, will perform swordplay in full armor for attendees.

Other anticipated events include a blacksmith demonstration at the Wilton Historical Society on July 30 and a culminating masquerade ball and feast on Aug. 4.
