OXFORD – About 66 former employees of the ICT Group in Oxford will receive extensive retraining help, thanks to a $397,740 federal grant.

The National Emergency Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor will help the workers find new jobs in the $7- to $10-an-hour range, which was what they were making when the call center closed in March.

The employees are eligible under the federal Trade Adjustment Assistance program, which provides training money to workers displaced by foreign imports. The program has been more recently expanded to cover people who have become unemployed by businesses relocating abroad.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday that the Maine Department of Labor’s Bureau of Employment Services will provide the training through the CareerCenter in South Paris.

The training will include an assessment of skill levels, counseling, career planning, pre-vocational services, case management, follow-up services, occupational and on-the-job training, customized and entrepreneurial training and skills upgrading.

In addition, the workers will receive, if needed, such support services as transportation, child care, emergency medical assistance and job search assistance.

Barb Olson, vice president of the Growth Council of Oxford Hills, said a new company involved in the information processing business is close to signing a contract to take over the former ICT Group space on Route 26, which is shared by CCS Cos., a debt-collection agency.

“We’re waiting for the contracts to be signed,” Olson said.
