JAY – We Support Our Troops is the theme of the local Independence Day parade, which will step off from RaNor Inc. and Jay High School at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 4.

The Frank L. Mitchell VFW Post will serve a chicken barbecue at the post home in Jay at 5 p.m. Those ordering takeout may pick up their meals between 4 and 5 p.m.

Other area events will include a concert in the Livermore Falls gazebo followed by fireworks at dusk.

Chairman Earl Howard is expecting at least 40 floats to take part in the parade, which will be led by the 195th Army Marching Band.

Along with the parade there will be a puppet show and a bicycle decorating contest for youths ages 10 to 12. Howard stressed that cyclists and those on in-line skates are required to wear helmets.

He also noted that throwing candy from vehicles is forbidden. Anyone wishing to hand out candy to children should do so while walking at the side of the parade.

Included in the parade lineup will be the Jay and Livermore Falls police departments, Korean and Vietnam war veterans, the Brunswick color guard, the VFW Post 3335 honor guard, a POW-MIA float by the VFW, the American Legion’s George Bunten Post 10 Miss Poppy, the VFW’s Mr. and Miss Buddy Poppy, various military units, scouts, a 4-H float, DARE program participants, the Down Under SCUBA float, Tri-Town Skating Club in-line skaters, Victorian Villa cars, antique cars and Fire Department equipment.
