LEWISTON – A man beaten by a group of people on Walnut Street on Thursday remained at Central Maine Medical Center a day later.
Craig Coulombe, 31, of Auburn was listed in good condition at the hospital Friday night, a spokesperson there said.
Meanwhile, police arrested two people in the early evening attack. Jonathan Clark, 19, of 16 Mower Ave., was charged with aggravated assault. He was being held at the Androscoggin County Jail on Friday night on $5,000 cash bail.
Tonya Cahill, 18, of Turner Street in Auburn was charged with assault. She was being held at the county jail on $200 cash bail.
The beating of Coulombe was still being investigated Friday night. Witnesses said the 31-year-old was sitting on his bicycle when a woman rushed over and shoved him. Coulombe fell to the ground and struck his head on the pavement, witnesses said.
Several people said a group of men then jumped on Coulombe, kicking and punching him while he lie unconscious on Walnut Street.
When police and rescue workers arrived, Coulombe was lying on his back, bleeding from the back of his head and his mouth. Cahill and Clark were taken into custody at the scene.
The relationship between the suspects and the victim remained unclear.
The 7:30 p.m. incident drew more than a hundred people to Walnut Street. One woman who owns an apartment building there said she complains almost daily about crowds of people hanging out on the street between Bartlett and Bates streets.
Police said they are aware of problems on the downtown street, and they continue to maintain a heavy presence in the area.
An investigation into the Thursday night attack was turned over to Lewiston police detectives.
