BOSTON (AP) – Police shot and killed a man who was allegedly acting wildly and threatening neighbors with a knife in the second fatal police shooting in Boston in a week.
Luis Gonzalez, 57, was killed just before 11 p.m. on Friday after police entered his apartment at 626 Tremont St.
Gonzalez was allegedly tossing window fans and other objects into a courtyard before police arrived, the Boston Herald reported.
Police said Gonzalez’s threatened officers with a knife after they entered his apartment. Police tried to subdue him with pepper spray, but he continued to threaten them with a knife, prompting two officers to fire their guns, police said at a press conference Saturday.
Police will investigate Friday’s shooting and report their findings to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office after 30 days.
“The public can count on the fairness of the investigation and the openness of the process,” said First Assistant District Attorney Josh Wall.
The shooting comes less than a week after police shot and killed Bert Bowen, 40, of the Roxbury neighborhood after he allegedly threatened two officers with a gun last Sunday. The officers involved, James Sheehan and Brian Smigielski, were placed on administrative leave while an investigation continues.
Community activists questioned whether Bowen’s shooting was justified after police said two shots hit Bowen in the back. Police said Bowen, an ex-convict on parole, was hit in the back by one officer after Bowen turned to aim his gun at the man’s partner.
