Our Constitution has reigned “supreme” with an assist from the Supreme Court to give the Bush administration’s handling of the Iraq war prisoners a major setback.

It is reassuring to read conservative Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s decision that, “a state of war is not a blank check for the president when it comes to the rights of the nation’s citizens.”

It is also refreshing to know that our justice system has survived President Bush’s attempts to subvert it for his use in his war on Iraq. Now we know that nearly 600 foreign detainees in U.S. military custody at Guantanamo Bay were held illegally, and they may have legal representation to challenge their detentions in U.S. courts.

I have read that the Supreme Court sharply rebuked President Bush’s claim that he has unfettered power to lock up people without giving them hearings.

It is with relief and gratitude that I salute our Supreme Court on their decision.
