NEW YORK – The Detroit Tigers beat up Yankees’ pitching for the second time in three days, and left New York with a series win for the first time in eight years.
Carlos Guillen had three hits, including a three-run homer, and the Tigers pounded rookie Brad Halsey in a 10-8 victory Wednesday.
Detroit, a 119-game loser last year, built a 10-3 lead by the sixth inning and took two of three from the Yankees, who have lost five of six to the Mets and Tigers since sweeping the Boston Red Sox last week at Yankee Stadium.
Halsey (1-2) gave up seven runs – five earned – and nine hits in 4 1-3 innings, an outing that put even more pressure on the Yankees to trade for a veteran starting pitcher. New York has allowed 49 runs in its last six games.
Craig Monroe hit a rare homer for the Tigers, who won after Ivan Rodriguez and manager Alan Trammell were ejected in the first inning for arguing. The All-Star catcher had been called out on strikes by plate umpire Angel Hernandez.
Detroit, which had lost five straight games coming in, won its first series at New York since taking two of three from Aug. 9-11, 1996. In mid-June, the crosstown Mets swept three games from the Tigers at Shea Stadium.
Jeremy Bonderman (6-6) took a four-hitter into the seventh and wound up allowing six runs and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings.
Blue Jays 12, Mariners 4
TORONTO – Josh Phelps homered twice, including a tremendous grand slam, and drove in a career-high seven runs to lead the Toronto Blue Jays over the struggling Seattle Mariners 12-4.
Phelps’ second career slam came against Julio Mateo in the sixth inning and landed three rows into the fifth deck at SkDome, just the 11th time a ball has reached the uppermost tier.
He also hit a two-run homer off Travis Blackley (1-1) in the fifth and added an RBI double in the seventh to become the fifth Toronto player to have seven RBIs in a game.
Rangers 9, Indians 8
CLEVELAND – Gary Matthews Jr. and Mark Teixeira each hit two-run homers in the seventh inning as the Texas Rangers rallied against Cleveland’s faulty bullpen for a 9-8 win over the Indians.
Teixeira connected off Jeriome Robertson (1-1), and two batters later, Matthews hit his off Rick White as Texas improved to 5-5 on a 14-game road trip.
Alfonso Soriano and Brad Fullmer hit solo shots for the Rangers, who lead the majors with 126 home runs.
Angels 12, White Sox 0
CHICAGO – Jarrod Washburn pitched a four-hitter for his first career shutout, and Jose Guillen homered twice and drove in five runs to lead the Anaheim Angels over the Chicago White Sox 12-0.
Angels catcher Bengie Molina grounded into a 5-4-3 triple play in the sixth inning.
With runners at first and second, Molina hit a hard one-hopper to Joe Crede, who stepped on third and threw a strike to Juan Uribe at second.
Uribe’s relay to first easily beat Molina, one of the slowest players in the majors.
Devil Rays 13, Orioles 3
BALTIMORE – Rob Bell took a two-hitter into the eighth inning, and Toby Hall and Damian Rolls each had three RBIs to lead the Tampa Bay Devils past the punchless Baltimore Orioles 13-3.
Twins 12, Royals 0
MINNEAPOLIS – Kyle Lohse threw Minnesota’s team-record third straight complete-game shutout, leading the Twins to a 12-0 victory over the crumbling Kansas City Royals.
Pirates 4, Marlins 3
MIAMI – Oliver Perez outpitched All-Star Carl Pavano, and the Pittsburgh Pirates got back to their winning ways with a 4-3 victory over the Florida Marlins.
Pittsburgh threw out the potential tying run at the plate to end the seventh inning on a strong relay from left fielder Rob Mackowiak to third baseman Bobby Hill.
Braves 14, Expos 2
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Jaret Wright pitched six solid innings, Andruw Jones homered twice and drove in five runs and the Atlanta Braves completed a three-game sweep of the Montreal Expos with a 14-2 rout.
Brewers 4, Cubs 0
MILWAUKEE – Doug Davis threw eight strong innings and Geoff Jenkins hit a two-run homer in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 4-0 win that completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs.
