LEWISTON – As if Adelphia’s corporate woes weren’t bad enough Thursday, even humble employees on the street were facing problems.

An Adelphia worker going door to door on Bartlett Street on Thursday night found himself facing a swarm of police and glowering neighbors.

At about 8 p.m., residents at Bartlett and Pine streets reported that a man posing as a cable representative was skulking on back porches and demanding payment from Adelphia customers.

Several police officers in the downtown area got to the scene within minutes. As the worker emerged from one apartment building, several officers were there to check his credentials. Neighbors stood on porches and glared at the scene.

The Adelphia representative may have been skulking, but he was not posing. Police took the man’s information and checked with one of his company supervisors. The worker, whose identity was not revealed, checked out. He was working the downtown beat, alerting Adelphia customers to pending connections or disconnections.

Once cleared by police, the man went along on his appointed rounds.
