NORWAY – “Pay what you can” is the mantra for this year’s Summer Dance Festival this weekend.
The dance festival, which includes classes and performances, is a collaboration between the Art Moves Dance Studio at 13 Cottage St., the Child Health Center, Norway festival organizers and Pinnacle Woodworks.
Kicking off the weekend is a performance by the Art Moves Dance Company and Inanna, a female African drumming group, at 7:30 p.m. today in the auditorium of Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. Tickets are $10 in advance, and $12 at the door.
Beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, there will be classes taught by accomplished professional dancers at the Art Moves Studio. Teachers include Josie Conte, Middle Eastern dance; Karen Montanaro, physical eloquence; Andrea Pike, jazz-funk; Sasha Campbell, tap; Daniel Moore, swing; and Bruce Tracy, hip-hop. Because of generous support by sponsors, Art Moves artistic director Debi Irons said she is able to offer the classes on a “pay as you can” basis, with the sliding scale ranging from no charge to $12.
Irons said all ages and abilities are welcome. “The only requirements are curiosity and a sense of humor.”
For those who prefer to sit back and watch others dance, there will be a free dance showcase combining students and professionals from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Norway Town Office lawn stage.
More information may be obtained by calling Irons at 743-5569.
