WEST PARIS – There soon will be three speed limits on Pioneer Street instead of two, thanks to a state traffic study.
Town Manager Donald Woodbury said currently it is 30 mph from Main Street near the former bank building to the entrance to the transfer station, and 35 mph from the transfer station to outer Main Street or Route 219.
The three zones going into effect within the next couple of weeks will be:
• from Main Street to the James Burke residence, 25 miles per hour;
• from the James Burke residence to Allen Road, 30 miles per hour; and
• from Allen Road to outer Main Street or Route 219, 35 miles per hour.
Residents along the street asked for the change. Since the street was paved speeds of passing vehicles have increased significantly, they said. Because several homes have children, it was felt that something had to be done.
Woodbury said, “The DOT has set the speed limit along the most congested area at 25 and has set them a bit higher as the homes thin out.”
Road Commissioner Bill Keach said he and his crew will be installing the new signs.
“We’ll put them up as soon as possible,” he said.
The town manager also announced that the town is looking at an immediate increase in the cost of hauling and disposing of clean wood from the transfer station. The price hike is due to higher tipping fees incurred by D&E Sanitation, which is the town’s waste hauler.
“This will obviously have an impact on costs at the transfer station, but we will be looking at possible ways to offset the higher costs,” Woodbury said.
He said the town office will be closed all day Tuesday, July 13, to allow staff to participate in training classes.
