Four people were arrested this week in connection with a series of burglaries in Oxford and Cumberland counties during the past two months.

Capt. William Rhoads of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said Gary Catalano, 26, of Harrison, Vittorio Patriotti, 26, of Naples and a juvenile from Raymond were arrested Thursday in connection with the burglaries.

On Friday, Rhoads said, police arrested Shawn Bennett, 22, of Mechanic Falls.

Catalano is charged with possession of heroin, Rhoads said. Patriotti is charged with burglary, possession of stolen property, theft and theft of firearms, he said. The juvenile, who cannot be identified because of her age, was charged with theft. Rhoads did not cite the charges brought against Bennett, but did say he is believed to be connected to the burglaries.

“The biggest reason we were looking for these guys so hard is because they were stealing firearms and checks and whatever they could get their hands on,” Rhoads said.

The first three arrests happened shortly after 6:26 p.m. Thursday when a car the Sheriff’s Office had been looking for was spotted on River Road in Naples, according to a police report released Friday. Deputy Stephen Welsh, the report states, recognized the car as one possibly related to burglaries in Naples, Casco, Raymond, Harrison and in Oxford County.

When Welsh stopped the vehicle, Bennett, Catalano and the juvenile fled the scene, according to the report. The latter two were caught with the help of officers from the Windham Police Department, Maine Warden Service, Bridgton Police Department and Maine State Police. A police dog was also brought to the scene to help track the suspects. Bennett and the juvenile were arrested nearly three miles from the spot where their vehicle had been stopped, according to the report.

Rhoads said police Thursday also found Patriotti, who was also believed to be connected to the burglaries, at a Raymond Road residence in North Raymond. Police were looking for Bennett at the residence, but did not locate him until Friday afternoon, when he was arrested in Mechanic Falls, Rhoads said.

Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office are continuing the investigation of the burglaries, he said.
