NEW YORK – Paul Quantrill and Mariano Rivera made sure the New York Yankees held off Tampa Bay for the second straight night.
Quantrill relieved Javier Vazquez with a two-ball count and the bases loaded in the sixth inning and escaped the jam, and New York beat the Devil Rays 5-4 Friday.
Rivera gave up a run in the ninth, then retired Rocco Baldelli on a foul popup with the bases loaded to end it.
White Sox 6, Mariners 2
CHICAGO – Carlos Lee homered twice and drove in five runs, and Jon Garland pitched seven solid innings to lead the Chicago White Sox over the depleted Seattle Mariners 6-2.
The Mariners have lost a season-high seven straight games. At 32-52, Seattle is 20 games below .500 for the first time since Aug. 5, 1994. They’ve also lost 10 straight on the road.
Royals 7, Orioles 0
BALTIMORE – Mike Sweeney ended Kansas City’s club-record streak of 32 scoreless innings with a two-run double in the sixth, and the Royals snapped an eight-game skid by beating the Baltimore Orioles 7-0.
Darrell May (6-9) pitched a five-hitter for his third career shutout, just 11 days after yielding seven runs and eight hits in a 10-1 loss to Baltimore.
Angels 5, Blue Jays 4
TORONTO – Bartolo Colon pitched seven strong innings for his second win in his last 11 starts, and Vladimir Guerrero drove in three runs to lead the Anaheim Angels to a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Colon (6-8) entered with the highest ERA among AL starters at 6.57. The 31-year-old right-hander, who signed a four-year, $51 million contract during the offseason, allowed four runs – three earned – on five hits and lowered his ERA to 6.38.
Indians 5, Athletics 4
CLEVELAND – Pinch-hitter Lou Merloni’s two-run single capped Cleveland’s three-run ninth inning off Octavio Dotel as the Indians rallied again to beat the Oakland Athletics, 5-4.
Merloni ripped the first pitch from Dotel (1-1) down the left-field line with the bases loaded to score Omar Vizquel and Travis Hafner before being mobbed by his teammates.
Tigers 5, Twins 3
MINNEAPOLIS – Jason Smith hit two of Detroit’s three homers to help the Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 5-3.
Carlos Guillen hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Gary Knotts (5-3) held the Twins to two runs over 6 2-3 innings for his first win in five starts. Ugueth Urbina walked Cristian Guzman with one out in the ninth before retiring Lew Ford and Joe Mauer for his 13th save in 15 chances.

Pirates 11, Expos 0
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Jason Bay homered twice and Pittsburgh scored a season-high nine times in the second inning to back Sean Burnett’s first career shutout and help the Pirates to an 11-0 win over the Montreal Expos.
Burnett (3-2) scattered 10 hits, struck out three and walked none, helping to shut out Montreal for the 13th time this season.
Mets 6, Marlins 3
MIAMI – Ty Wigginton homered and had an RBI double, leading the New York Mets to a 6-3 victory over the foundering Florida Marlins. Mike Cameron also homered for the Mets, who scored four runs in the eighth inning to win for the seventh time in nine games.
Cardinals 6, Cubs 1
ST. LOUIS – Jason Marquis kept the Chicago Cubs reeling and the St. Louis Cardinals got home runs from Edgar Renteria, Albert Pujols, Jim Edmonds and Tony Womack in a 6-1 victory.
Greg Maddux (7-7) gave up three of the homers as the Cardinals won their ninth in a row at home, including the first seven games of a nine-game homestand St. Louis leads the NL Central by seven games over the Cubs.
Phillies 7, Braves 6
PHILADELPHIA – Tomas Perez’s pinch-hit, RBI single in the 10th helped the Philadelphia Phillies overcome a five-run deficit and two three-run homers by Rafael Furcal to beat the Atlanta Braves 7-6.
Chase Utley hit a solo homer off John Smoltz with one out in the ninth to tie it at 6 and Mike Lieberthal had four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the eighth.
Reds 3, Brewers 0
MILWAUKEE – Aaron Harang tied his career high with 10 strikeouts and Wily Mo Pena homered in the Cincinnati Reds’ 3-0 victory over the punchless Milwaukee Brewers.
Harang (5-2) has allowed just one earned run in 18 2-3 innings.
