RUMFORD – Twin OUI roadblocks on State Route 2 and Lincoln Avenue Friday night netted five arrests.
The roadblocks were the first Rumford Police have set up this summer, part of a $4,500 Maine Department of Public Safety grant. Rumford drivers should expect to see many more during the coming months.
“The grant runs through September,” Sgt. Tracey Higley said Saturday. Police set up the two checkpoints from 8 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday.
“I couldn’t even begin to count the number of cars we stopped,” Higley said.
Charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence were Ross Rand, 42, of Berlin N.H.; Meyrick Matthews, 41, of Cushing; and Linda McCoubrey, 45, of Mexico. Police also arrested Marc Chartier, 26, of Andover, on outstanding warrants and charged Jeremy Byron, 29, of Rumford, with operating a motor vehicle after suspension.
Higley said officers gave out several summonses and confiscated some illegal drugs, as well.
The grant is part of Maine Bureau of Highway Safety funding set aside to pay overtime to officers working to catch and arrest drunken drivers.
