SAN FRANCISCO – Jason Schmidt won his 11th consecutive decision, the longest streak by a Giants pitcher in 42 years, and San Francisco defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-2.
Pedro Feliz drove in two runs and Ray Durham homered and had three RBIs as the Giants won for the fourth time in five games.
Luis Tererro had two hits, and Robby Hammock and Alex Cintron drove in runs for the Diamondbacks, who have lost six of seven overall and 12 of their last 13 on the road.
Schmidt (11-2), who was named to the NL All-Star team Tuesday in Houston, has not lost since April 26 – a span of 15 starts. Jack Sanford won 11 straight for the Giants during the 1962 season.
Schmidt allowed two runs and five hits over eight innings. He walked two and struck out 10. He has a five-game winning streak over the Diamondbacks.
Casey Fossum (2-8) fell to 1-6 on the road after allowing six runs and six hits in four-plus innings. Fossum did not retire a batter in the fifth, allowing five straight to reach base before giving way to Stephen Randolph.
Padres 4, Rockies 2
SAN DIEGO – Ryan Klesko hit a rare home run and All-Star Mark Loretta also connected for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Colorado Rockies 4-2 on Sunday to snap a four-game losing streak.
Klesko’s two-run shot off Denny Stark with one out in the third inning was just his second this season and his fourth since the All-Star break a year ago. Klesko had gone 152 at-bats since his last homer on April 18 against Arizona, a game-winner in the ninth.
Expos 2, Pirates 1
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Scott Downs pitched seven sharp innings to give Montreal its first win by a left-handed starter in three years, leading the Expos over the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 Sunday in their final game this season in Puerto Rico.
Montreal took three of four from Pittsburgh and left Hiram Bithorn Stadium with a 7-14 record after going 13-9 in San Juan last year.
Braves 6, Phillies 4
PHILADELPHIA – Julio Franco hit a three-run home run, J.D. Drew homered among his four hits and the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 on Sunday.
The Braves, who have won 12 of 15, took two of three over the weekend to pull within a game of the first-place Phillies.
Atlanta starter Russ Ortiz (10-6) picked up his fourth straight decision. Ortiz surrendered four runs on six hits, while walking five in 5 2-3 innings.
Reds 9, Brewers 6
MILWAUKEE – Jason LaRue hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth inning and Wily Mo Pena followed with his second of the game, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 9-6 comeback victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.
Pena went 4-for-5 with three RBIs in place of the injured Ken Griffey Jr., who was placed on the 15-day disabled list before the game with a torn right hamstring.
Griffey, who will miss the All-Star game, was hurt Saturday night while trying to run down Brady Clark’s fourth-inning drive to right-center in the fourth inning of a 5-0 loss to Milwaukee. An MRI exam Sunday revealed a partial tear of the muscle.
Dodgers 7, Astros 4
LOS ANGELES – Paul Lo Duca hit his first career grand slam, and Jose Lima pitched six strong innings in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 7-4 victory over the Houston Astros on Sunday.
Jose Hernandez hit a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth for the Dodgers, who head into the All-Star break leading the NL West by a half-game over San Francisco.
The Dodgers snapped Roy Oswalt’s four-game winning streak, and went into the All-Star break at 48-38 after their 11th victory in 14 games. It’s only the second time they’ve been in first place at the break since 1994.
Marlins 5, Mets 2
MIAMI – Jeff Conine snapped a slump with a grand slam for the Florida Marlins on Sunday, helping Dontrelle Willis beat the New York Mets for the fifth time in as many tries, 5-2.
Willis (7-5) allowed two runs in 6 1-3 innings. His ERA in five career starts against New York rose to 1.05 from 0.64. Conine ended a 3-for-34 slump and broke up a scoreless tie with his sixth career grand slam in the third inning off Al Leiter (5-3).
Cubs 8, Cardinals 4
ST. LOUIS – Kerry Wood won his first start in two months and Sammy Sosa homered and drove in five runs, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-4.
The Cubs salvaged the final game of a six-game trip in which they managed a total of five runs in the first five games, and kept the National League’s best team from completing a perfect homestand.
The Cardinals, who lead the Cubs in the NL Central by seven games, outscored their opponents 45-13 in the first eight games before Chris Carpenter got rocked in the final game before the All-Star break.
Wood (4-3), sidelined since May 11 with triceps tendinitis, gave up one run and three hits in five innings with five strikeouts and two walks. He threw 80 pitches in his first victory since beating the Mets with seven shutout innings on April 24.
Jim Edmonds homered in his fifth straight game for the Cardinals, hitting his 21st of the season in the fourth off Wood. St. Louis’ 10-game winning streak at home came to an end in front of 49,250 – the third straight sellout of the series.
The Cardinals scored three runs against LaTroy Hawkins in the ninth, on Albert Pujols’ RBI single and sacrifice flies by Mike Matheny and Tony Womack.
Michael Barrett also homered and drove in two runs for the Cubs, who avoided getting swept in consecutive road series and won for only the ninth time in 40 games at Busch Stadium over the last five seasons.
Carpenter (9-4) struck out the first five batters on only 25 pitches, and retired the first two hitters in the third. He came unglued after right fielder Reggie Sanders twice mishandled the ball on Jose Macias’ two-out single, allowing Macias to go to third.
Starting with Macias, 10 of the last 13 batters Carpenter faced reached safely. Sosa’s three-run shot was the big hit of a four-run third, and he chased Carpenter with a two-run single in the fourth that made it 6-0.
Entering the game, Carpenter was 3-0 against the Cubs with a 2.42 ERA. After giving up six runs in 3 2-3 innings – his shortest outing of the season – he left with a 4.15 ERA against Chicago.
Sosa’s homer was the first off Carpenter in 33 innings over five games.
Sosa had 10 RBIs in his first 20 games since returning from the disabled list because of a sprained ligament in his lower back. But he also homered on Saturday and hit his 16th of the season to straightaway center in the third.
Edmonds homered into the Cardinals’ bullpen in right and reliever Julian Tavarez caught the ball with his cap. Barrett restored the six-run cushion in the fifth when he hit his 10th homer off Cal Eldred, working for the first time in nine days.
