OXFORD – Excessive speed is being blamed for a crash that killed two teenagers in Oxford Monday.

Venessa Jordan of Gray and Nicholas Noble of Poland, both 19, were pronounced dead at the scene after Jordan’s 2001 Audi hit a tree near 500 King St., near the Poland line.

State police Trooper Andre Paradis said Jordan was believed to have been the driver, but that hasn’t been confirmed. An accident reconstruction team has determined that the Audi was traveling well in excess of the posted 45 mph speed limit.

Some troopers who responded to the scene described the accident as one of the worst wrecks they had witnessed, according to state police spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Both teens were ejected from the car, Paradis said. Capt. Jim Davis of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department, who was in the area, was the first person on the scene after neighbors heard the crash and called 911, Paradis said.

He said there were indications the driver left the road and tried to regain control but was unsuccessful. There was no indication at the scene that alcohol was involved, but toxicology tests will be done as a standard procedure in traffic fatalities, he said.
